Dog Bites
Many of us are dog owners, making it hard to fathom that our beloved pet could cause serious injury to an individual. Yet every year, countless people are injured as a result of dog bites and attacks. Some of these can be very serious, causing years of physical pain, disfigurement, and in some cases permanent fear of dogs. In Ontario, the Dog Owners Liability Act makes dog owners liable for victim compensation.
Anyone bitten or attacked by a dog should immediately:
seek medical attention
ensure the dog has had all the necessary shots by asking the owner
obtain the name and address of the owner of the dog
immediately take photographs of the injured area
keep all bills, receipts and other evidence of expenses arising from the attack
Over 50 Years of Dog Bite Experience
When Mr. Wong’s newspaper was not delivered, he went to his paperboy’s home to find out why. As he stood in front of the home, he was attacked by a large German Shepherd dog, which was sitting on the front porch. Alfred Kwinter sued the dog’s owner and received a substantial award for compensation for the dog attack. On appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal recognized the strict liability of dog owners resulting from a dog attack (Wong vs. Arnold).
